Disability Support Workers Awards

Nominations opened last week for the 2011 Western Australian Disability Support Worker Awards. These Awards are designed to acknowledge outstanding achievements and recognise the valuable role support workers play in the inclusion of people with disability.

Last year more than 120 nominations were received over 4 categories and the spotlight shone on the outstanding efforts of disability support workers during a gala dinner at Burswood’s Grand Ballroom in March. Each winner received a $2,000 prize.

Following the overwhelming success of the 2010 Awards, National Disability Services WA, in partnership with the Disability Services Commission, will again host the Disability Support Worker Awards in 2011. This year we welcome the support of Platinum Sponsor, HESTA Super Fund, and Gold Sponsor, St John of God Health Care.

About the Awards:

People with disability and/or their families, peers, staff and managers are invited to nominate a disability support worker working in Western Australia who they recognise as valued and highly respected in their field of work.

We encourage you to nominate support workers in your organisation and to promote these Awards within the sector, including the nomination process, to your service users, your employees and family members. This is an opportunity to reward and recognise excellence in the day-to-day duties of a support worker.

This year the event will be expanded to include awards for support workers in employment services. Nominations will be judged by a panel in the following categories:

  • Accommodation Support
  • Individual Accommodation Support
  • Community Support
  • Emerging Leader
  • Disability Employment Services
  • Australian Disability Enterprises

The winners of the SIX Disability Support Worker Awards will be presented with a prize of $2,000 and a plaque. Winners will be announced at a gala event at Burswood Entertainment Complex on Saturday 9 April 2011.

For further information please see the Nomination Form which can be copied and forwarded.

Carers Week Celebrations

We would like to invite you to attend our Family Carer’s Week Celebration.

On Wednesday 20 October 2010, we are hosting an event for Family Carers. This event is part of national Carers Week (18th – 24th October), driven by Carers WA.

This week is dedicated to people who provide un-paid carer support to a family member or friends, who may have a disability, mental illness or disorder, chronic condition, terminal illness or who are frail. Special events during the week are to recognize the efforts of those Family Carers, and acknowledge the importance of their roles within our community.

The event that Intework is hosting is a Spanish-style Celebration at Victoria Gardens East Perth. This will provide an opportunity to bring Family Carers together, support each other and share information and ideas.  If you require respite support/care for your cared for person so you can attend the event please contact your LifeSkills Program Manager.
