Lifeskills

(ILL-CMYK)-Lifeskills-plusIntework can provide activities in community settings that enhance and develop daily Life Skills. Our services are locally based across a large portion of the metropolitan area. This is a brief description of the service

Key Benefits

  • We provide an individually focussed recreation program that suits the persons’ interests and skills.
  • Activities use community and centre based facilities.
  • We provide a flexible program that can adapt to work placement needs and demand.

Program Aim

We aim to provide activities that stimulate and develop skills in the following areas:

  • Social
  • Emotional
  • Physical
  • Intellectual

The program is designed to assist clients to increase their choices and optimise their overall wellbeing through ongoing social participation in all areas of the community.

The Lifeskills program is committed to upholding the individual aspirations of people who have a disability. This is achieved primarily through individualised, responsive programming and structured support and training opportunities designed to match the needs of each individual. Individuals participating in the Lifeskills program typically are in receipt of funding from the Disability Services Commission (State Government) for Post School Options and Alternatives to Employment. The Lifeskills program also provides individualised services through self-funded clients, brokerage, contracts, one-off grants and other negotiated arrangements.

All Lifeskills activities and experiences are created in consultation with our clients, families and staff allowing opportunities for growth, increased self-esteem, personal relationships and a sense of self-worth for the individuals on the program.

As well as having fun during program activities, Lifeskills clients engage in informative, educational and safety oriented programs.

Respite

Intework’s suite of Lifeskills programs has increased to see the establishment of Lifeskills facilities in Joondalup (North Metro), Midvale (East Metro), Gosnells (South East Metro) and Busselton (Regional South West). The establishment of centres in these areas has complimented our existing Lifeskills programs allowing us to offer centre based training opportunities and respite opportunities for our program participants. These centres are fully equipped to offer computer internet and electronic games areas, arts and crafts, cooking and food preparation, theatre rooms for watching TV and movies and fitness and exercise areas that reflect the specific needs of our clients.

The funding to establish these centres, and subsequent respite opportunities was provided by the Commonwealth Department of Families and Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs, as part of their ongoing commitment to provide respite opportunities for older Australian carers of people with disabilities and/or mental health issues by funding programs and facilities that people can access.

The respite program incorporates a variety of respite funding opportunities for our clients and their carers – including

• Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaHCSIA) through the resources of the Commonwealth Carelink centres)

• Intensive Family Support, Targeted Support and Community Living Plans (State Government) through the Disability Services Commission

Intework’s Respite services operate as a complimentary extension of the Lifeskills Program allowing Intework to provide a flexible and responsive ‘mixed model’ approach including centre based activities and community based respite services. The respite program is designed to be person centered with an individual planning approach involving the person with a disability (care recipient) and their carer, responding to the ‘throughout the day’ and changing care/respite needs of the carer.
